The jelly community lost one of its best this year. Though I never had the privilege of meeting her personally, Dr. Mary Needler Arai’s work has been a cornerstone in my career. In particular, her book “A Functional Biology of Scyphozoa” is a must-read for any jelly lover, and the first book I purchased on the first research grant I ever received. This beautiful tribute to Dr. Arai in the Marine Ecological Progress Series, by Drs. Jennifer E. Purcell and William M. Hamner, captures what a treasure she was to our field. Rest in Peace Dr. Arai. May your ashes float in the sea, and may your work enrich the lives of all those who study jellies for years to come.
